The SquidWheelies Sturgis 2011 Experience

After being asked to perform at the famous Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground  for the 71st Annual Sturgis Bike Rally with a super short notice, Jason Larson, Brandon Kloss and Chet Michaelson began to prepare. The previous year had an attendance of well over 500,000 & they were expecting more this year so we knew we were going to have a very busy week ahead of us, but we were super stoked to get out there & perform at the Broken Spoke!

So after 10 hours of driving we finally made it to Sturgis South Dakota. We were amazed at the number of riders that we had seen there and along the way. Sturgis and the surrounding cities were literally over flowing with bikers and the Sturgis Bike Rally was well under way.

We arrived with our trailer loaded down to the max with plenty of bikes, tires to burn up for the week, spare parts from Dennis Kirk & Cowboys Cycle, our Castle X gear for protection, and everything else needed to put on some amazing performances for this hyped up Sturgis crowd! After we got settled in we started setting up our performance area and getting everything ready. The Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground is definitely a sight to see being located on 79 North by Bear Butte State Park. With the worlds largest biker pool, Concerts, Bloody Mary Biker Breakfast Buffet, RV Spots, Private Cabins, the 45,000 SQ FT Broken Spoke Saloon that you can drive your bike through, and much much more it is definitely the place to be in Sturgis!

After the first day of performances we came to realize that we were in for a long week. Our performance area was small, the pavement was covered with dirt and dust so traction was limited, the performance area was taped off with caution tape, but our performances were in between the saloon and the main concert stage and there were lots of people that came to watch and check out the show!

We threw down some killer performances on the limiter most the time and utilized the performance area the best we could. For our performances we brought in a steel barrel and a jersey barrier for stalls. We worked some pinup girls into our performances as well which the crowds went crazy about and we also had a few other surprises for the crowd that you will have to come check out in person at one of our performances to see for yourself.

We were worried that the Harley riders wouldn't like us too much because we were on sport bikes but we were wrong, the crowds were crazy about the performances. We had one guy come up to us after a performance and tell us this. "when I first seen you guys riding through the bar on your sport bikes on the rev limiter, I thought who the hell are these idiots! Until I followed you out of the saloon and watched you guys perform! Wow you guys are insane & amazing! I loved it! whens your next performance?"

Some of our performances we would start by riding our bikes through the saloon and enter into our performance area just right outside the saloon. After many of our performances we received tons of cheering, shouting, and motorcycles reving up there engines! It was great to see everyone so excited, and to receive a such a good response from the Sturgis crowd.

During the little downtime that we had we were able to take some bike rides through Sturgis & the Black Hills, watch the live concerts, visit the pool & check out some of the many other great festivities going on at the famous Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground. We also got to stop by & visit our friends at KTM Cycle Hutt, they just opened up a new shop in Sturgis. They helped us out with tire changes and anything else we needed, so be sure to check them out at www.ktmcyclehutt.com!

During our time at the 71st Annual Sturgis Bike Rally we blew many many tires, put our bikes through hell & back (literally!), made many new friends, and by the end of the fourth day we looked like hell and felt exhausted! Would we do it again? In a heart beat!!! Cant wait for the 2012 Sturgis Bike Rally! Gona be bigger and better than ever!!!

The excitement is hard to shake and the new friends are hard to leave so deciding to come back and do it all over is an easy choice. The magic of the Hills is mesmerizing and the roads, well; there are few places on this good earth that offer this kind of riding.

We would like to thank The Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground for bringing us out, Our Sponsors, Rachel Clarke for taking so many amazing photos, and everyone else that made this possible. Be sure to check out our sponsors page on our site, www.brokenspokecampground.comwww.ktmcyclehutt.com and photographer Rachel Clarke's website www.whinnies.com.

See you all in 2012!!!
